Toning Layers

Toning layers are those layers of either shellac, glue, varnish, or polyeurathane that are mixed with pigments or coals to create certain hues or tones. These layers can also be used as a way to further depth or chirascuro. Toning layers can even exaggerate chirascuro to the point of sfumato, which is an extreme form of shading, using the opposite ends of the color spectrum.
